Alti Wine Exchange

What would you do if you found an expensive wine in a cellar?

DEAR READER,

Never in my life have I been happier to pontificate about wine than at my computer desk. In person is stimulating, sure, but they always talk back at some point. My lovely readers, however, only speak when I like! This internet thing has utility!

Sommelier Ferdinand,

I finally got around to sorting through my father’s cellar after he passed away last year and I came across a 1979 Chateau Margaux. I don’t have a question about it, I just wanted to share. -Delphine

Delphine, firstly, I must send my condolences for your father’s passing. I recently lost my father, and that death almost broke me, were it not for the expansive wine cellar he left to me.

Second, that’s a spectacular find in your lap! You could sell the bottle, if you are so inclined—but if I were you, I would indulge. Paris in 1979—what a time to be alive… I was only eighteen years old, ready to live my life. I hardly had a decade of wine experience, yet I knew my calling more than anything else. If I had that bottle back in, my palate could hardly contain its excitement at the earthy notes. The flavors of violet would overwhelm my senses, and surely I wouldn’t be able to place the dark, sweet taste of the blackcurrant.

But you, Delphine—you have the ability, I’m sure, to properly enjoy this wine. After all, you left me no questions; so, clearly you know what you’re doing. Your father left you a wonderful gift, and you should make the most of it. Some children would sell it off—because you would make a pretty penny—but you recognize the possibility of the Château Margaux. It’s ability to transport you with a wholesome, exquisitely preserved flavor profile—there’s nothing like it. Even the hundreds of dollars you could get for the bottle wouldn’t be worth losing that flavor profile.

Call this Sommelier presumptuous—but I believe you’re making the right decision to consume this ancestral wine. In fact, I’m proud that my readers choose to enjoy the wine rather than pawn it off. Perhaps you caught me on a good day, Delphine, but your situation impressed me, and I hope you make the most of this ’79.

Let it be a celebration not just of excellent wine, but your father’s memory. And let that memory be as rich as the flavor profile!
