Donatella Cinelli Colombini – Leading female winemaker in Montalcino

Donatella is a winery owner who runs two estates in Tuscany.

One in Chianti called Fattoria del Colle, the other in Montalcino where she makes this Brunello, the Casato Prime Donne estate.

Donatella’s ancestors were already owners of these estates at the end of the 16th. 500 years of family winemaking tradition.

Yet, when Donatella founded her estate called Donatella Cinelli Colombini at the end of the 1990s, she didn’t only go about perpetuating the family tradition.

To increase the quality of the wines, she replanted almost entirely all of the vineyards.

She took several steps to open her winery to wine tourism and she staffed her company with as many women as possible. Her energy was so positive that in 2003 she won the Oscar for the best Italian wine producer awarded by a famous Italian wine Magazine: Bibenda.

Donatella is also deeply involved in a movement called le Donne del Vino, understand ‘women in wine’, that encourages the presence of female staff in the wine industry in Italy.

Simply put, Donatella is a recognized figure in the elite Italian wine world.

Her wines from Brunello and from Chianti are very well known and appreciated by wine connoisseurs in Italy as well in 38 countries around the world.

From her best vineyard on the Casato Prime Donne, on a small plot of estate in Montalcino, Donatella knew she had the opportunity to make an exceptional wine for the future, as a legacy. She decided to make the IOsonoDonatella cuvée…

The Rare IOsonoDonatella Brunello di Montalcino

When Donatella created this wine, she wanted three things:

First, she wanted the best possible vineyard to make the best wine she could make.

She selected a plot on the northern slope of Montalcino, using the few grapes of that small vineyard called Ardita in a splendid sunny area.

Secondly, she wanted to sign the cuvée with her name as a sign of her pride to have achieved such high level of quality. She named it IOsonoDonatella which means, ‘I am Donatella’ because this wine represents both Donatella’s dreams for the future and her history.

Finally, she wanted a unique packaging.

IOsonoDONATELLA bottle tells the personal story of Donatella Cinelli Colombini who as a young woman studied medieval gold jewelry. The box opens like a flower and includes references to local history like the pattern on the outside which represents Pienza cloth, a local material used in Tuscany during the middle ages you can see traces off in the paintings inside Siena’s Cathedral.

The glass bottle is covered with stars that shine in the light. In the center, they become a ring with inside the gold coat of arms of her family.

IOsonoDonatella Brunello di Montalcino – Tasting Review

IOsonoDonatella is made from 100% handpicked and hand-selected Sangiovese grapes. After fermentation, for refining and deepening, the Brunello is aged for nearly three years in 500-700L French oak casks that were handmade in France by four French artisans.

This is a very small production. Only 1000 of these bottles have ever been made, of which 200 are now available on the Alti Exchange platform.

Tasting Notes

As soon as you pour IOsonoDONATELLA and have a first look at it, you are straight away impressed by the intensity of its color. It’s got some dark yet bright red hues with a garnet intensity to them form the long aging in barrel.

The aromatic profile transports you into the beautiful hills of Tuscany. The intense notes of truffle mixed with a myriad of spices, nutmeg, clove and delicate vanilla captivate your senses.

The fruity expression is also intense and bursting, ripe sour cherry goodness that is so typical of good Sangiovese wines, comes with ripe red berry fruit, blackberry. Deep and complex to the nose…

The flavor intensity is equally as powerful, submerging your palate in an ocean of fruity sour cherry, plum and prune. It’s warm and generously fruity and spicy. But never is it overwhelming as the delivery and the texture are refined, velvety and palate-coating.

Long finish on layered spices, delicate toasted oak tones and the comforting ripe fruit expression.

A multi-facetted and fascinating wine with a rare length and layered complexity.

IOsonoDONATELLA should develop even further depth and intensify its savory notes of truffle and spices positively for the next 15-20 years.

Drink 2030-2040.
